From now until July 2026 I have the deepest honor of working with BelRed Art District and Densho to uplift and preserve local Bellevue Japanese American history through residency at the BelRed Arts Studio!
From the call: "This residency seeks to honor these histories while encouraging artists to draw historically grounded connections to the contemporary moment. Artists are invited to reflect on how this history resonates today, particularly in relation to ongoing issues of racial injustice, civil liberties, and the experiences of immigrant and marginalized communities. Strong proposals may explore personal, social, or political connections that bridge the past to the present". I will be documenting my time at the residency here, hopefully connecting the scribbles of the artistic practice to the tangible research and documentation of this important history. I also hope to do a bit of research into my own family's experiences with Japanese American incarceration, utilizing the documentation available through Densho's digital repository.
